As the 3rd wave of COVID-19 crisis continues to loom over us, The Government of India may impose combat measure by directing strict curfew norms. This may result into difficult time for poor people who are earning on daily wages. At this great hour of need, The SHARE GLOBAL, in close coordination with State Governments & District Administration, has stepped in to provide relief by providing food to thousands of people.

By adhering to all safety and hygiene measures, SHARE GLOBAL has begun its relief service by providing meal or packed grocery kits to the marginalised and low-income segment of the society comprising of daily wage workers, migrant labourers, construction site workers, and needy people at old age homes and night shelters. Presently, the Trust and its Association Foundations are providing food relief in, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Himachal Pradesh.

During last 2 waves of COVID-19, support from Gov. agencies, district authorities and citizens has been encouraging, and was enabling us to make a difference in those tough circumstances. But many more are still in need.

The cost of each cooked meal is ₹30 and the cost of each grocery kit is ₹800. Each grocery kit contains rice, wheat flour, pulses, oil, spices, and vegetables that can serve a small family for a month.

So far, SHARE GLOBAL has served 92,354 cooked meals and 34,628 essential grocery kits.

During the COVID-19 crisis, many elderly senior citizens who are living alone have gone through a toughest time of their life. Lockdown and hampered transportation made their lives more difficult in terms of availability of food, physical care, necessary finance and medical aid.

This program comes as a ray of hope for many elders with no family, financial or social support at a cost of Rs. 9,000/- per year (@Rs. 750/- per month). As a Sponsor your financial help will provide them basic physical care, essential food & medical needs. This program also aims to increase their awareness of their rights and entitlements. So far, over 10,000 people have been supported under this project.

We also provide personal care to all those senior citizens whose children are staying away and wish to take care of them the way they can do at the home.

Dear Petron,

Child malnutrition is a chronic problem and a longstanding challenge for the public administration of India. The first National Family Health Survey (NFHS) in 1992-1993 found that India was one of the worst performing countries on child health indicators.

The survey reported that more than half the children under four were underweight and stunted. One in every six children was excessively thin (wasted).

All these conditions could be attributed to the prevalence of chronic malnutrition in children.

Despite decades of investment to tackle this malaise, India’s child malnutrition rates are still one of the most alarming in the world. The Global Hunger Index (2020) — which is calculated on the basis of total undernourishment of the population, child stunting, wasting and child mortality — places India at the 94th spot among 107 countries.

SHARE Global has taken a vow to eradicate this stigma to the nation. In collaboration with Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Gov. of India, SHARE Global is working hard to improve nutrition status of rural children.

SHARE Global is engaged in distributing “Kid Rasayan biscuits” which is a research-based formula containing nutritional food stuffs such as Ragi, Wheat, Sesame, peanuts etc along with some tonic ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Tulasi etc. These biscuits are highly effective not only replenishing nutrition deficiency but also helps enhance body’s immunity to fight against infectious diseases.

• In last 3 years, NGO has successfully brought more than 11000 children aging between 3 to 6 years out of malnutrition and weak immunity.
• SHARE Global has also catered nutritional meal in more than 235 primary schools of Rural India so far.

Dear Petron,

SHARE GLOBAL is committed to improving the lives of rural communities in Gujarat, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. The organic medicinal plant cultivation project aims to increase the incomes of 3,500 poor farmers and their families by giving them a fair price for their organic produce.

Challenges

Herbs and medicinal plants are grown extensively by poor farmers in pockets of Gujarat, Odisha and MP. The farmers sell their produce unprocessed and normally through a chain of middlemen. As these herbs are unprocessed and the middlemen charge huge cuts, farmers receive a tiny fraction of the price paid by the consumer. Moreover, since the farmers are scattered and not unionized, the middlemen and traders are able to dictate the prices, causing further loss to the farmers.

In order to provide access to international market, these small pocket farms need to acquire organic certification which is unreasonably costly (E.g. around $700 / year).

Many farmers want to switch to organic farming to save their farm soil from further deterioration and to receive better income but they are afraid of risk of low yield in initial few years and so the drop in revenue.

Solution

Being bridge between farmer and direct industry or consumer, SHARE GLOBAL manages to provide a fair price to farmers. It also acts as a rate equalizer, as other organic herb traders are forced to buy at a higher price. Finally, farmers who are part of the cooperative are able to control the organic quality and to sell at due rewarding prices.

To encourage those farmers who wants to switch over to organic farming SHARE GLOBAL provides all possible financial assistance to minimize their initial risk of revenue drop and thereby maintaining their faith in organic farming.

Long-Term Impact

The low incomes received from herb cultivation have led to many farmers cultivating genetically modified crops, which requires chemical pesticides and fertilizers. These have been damaging the soil and ground water of entire nation. It also uses child labour.

Organic herb cultivation is providing them a fair market and better income as compared to conventional crops. In addition to increasing the incomes and well-being of poor farming communities, the project also promotes eco-friendly and sustainable agriculture.

Each farmer support can be in following ways

• Monitory support for investment risk - Rs. 5,000/- acre
• Seed and input materials – Rs. 7000/- acre
• Organic certification fees – Rs. 2000/- acre

When you plant a tree, you don’t just plant a sapling but hope. We have learned it the hard way that trees are extremely important for our survival. We first resorted to deforestation and made space for more buildings on earth. Later, when we saw the environment getting seriously affected, we were introduced to something called “afforestation”, a simple process of planting more trees for a better future.

SHARE Global has planted more than 1.5 million trees in various states of India. Our strategy combines environment protection and revenue generation both so we conduct afforestation of medicinal plants which not only helps improve their surroundings but also yields some secondary revenue for local communities.
